District 18 (Währing) – place for cultural enrichment and and nature enjoyment

The city of Vienna was divided into 23 districts in the 1850s as part of an administrative reform when the city expanded significantly. This system allows for better coordination of the city’s development, allocation of resources and local solutions to local issues. In addition, it is much easier to address security, education, and infrastructure issues in the delimited territories. In this article, we will take a closer look at one of Vienna’s most interesting districts – Währing, after which the asteroid (226) Weringia, discovered in 1882 at the Vienna Observatory, was named.

District 18 (Währing): location, area and population

The Währing is located in the north-west of Vienna and covers 6.28 km² on the slopes of the Vienna Woods between the Gürtel and Höhenstraße. It borders the 19th district (Döbling) to the north, the 9th district (Alsergrund) to the east, and the 17th district (Hernals) to the south and west. The population of Währing has undergone significant changes over the past century – in the first decades of the 20th century there was a rapid increase in the number of residents, but later on, the number of locals became less and less. The minimum population was recorded in 1869 (17879 people) and the maximum in 1910 (87658 people). As of 2023, in Währing live 51559 people.

Public transport

Public transport plays an important economic, social and environmental role in Vienna and in most other cities. In District 18, the situation is quite good – both the central districts and the outskirts of the city can be reached by the S45 city train, U6 metro, trams 40 and 41, as well as by buses 13A, 37A, 40A, 48A, and VAL 2.
