Vienna is the world’s most livable city in 2023

Vienna is the best city to live in! This is according to a recent report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The EIU is a world leader in global business intelligence that annually compiles the best cities to live in rankings. According to the new 2023 research (conducted between 13 February and 12 March), there has been a marked improvement in living standards around the world following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. The average index score in the cities surveyed is 76.2 out of 100, up from 73.2 last year. The average score of the leader of this year’s ranking, Vienna, is 98.4. As it turned out, this city is very close to the ideal.

What criteria are used to evaluate cities and how many points did Vienna get?

The following categories are considered when assessing cities.

Stability

The stability category includes indicators such as the number of petty crimes, the number of violent crimes, the level of threat of terrorist acts, military conflicts, and civil unrest. Vienna scored 100 points out of 100 in this category.

Healthcare, education and infrastructure

The healthcare category takes into account factors such as the availability and quality of private healthcare, the availability and quality of public healthcare, the availability of over-the-counter medicines and the overall health of the population. Here again, Vienna scored a perfect 100 out of 100, as well as in two other categories – education (accessibility and quality of private education, public education indicators) and infrastructure (quality of roads, public transport, international connections; access to quality housing, energy, water, telecommunications).

Culture and environment

The only category where Vienna scored 93.5 points is culture and environment, which takes into account, among other things, humidity/temperature ratings, climate comfort for travelers, social or religious restrictions, censorship, access to sports, cultural accessibility, food and drink, and consumer goods and services. The slightly lower score can be explained by the relatively small number of large-scale sporting events in the city, but in our opinion, this is more of an advantage than a disadvantage.

Vienna is an ideal city to live in

As you can see, Vienna combines stability, excellent infrastructure, quality education, a developed healthcare system, as well as many cultural and entertainment events, which makes it a very attractive and comfortable city to live in.
