Landstraße is an inner district of Vienna, located in the central part of the city and separated by a ring road from the outer districts. It covers an area of 7.42 km² and has a population of around 96,756 people.
The central districts of Vienna are distinguished by their rich historical heritage. Therefore, while driving around, you will see old Catholic churches, monuments and architectural monuments. The district is best known for the Belvedere.
Belvedere:
This is a large park with two stunning Baroque palaces – the Upper and Lower Belvedere. The chambers of the two palaces, located at either end of the park, are hung with works of art from the Middle Ages to the present day. Together, these galleries are known as the Austrian Gallery. Next to the Belvedere is the Salesian Church, one of the largest and most impressive baroque churches in the city.
Luxury apartments and penthouses also catch the eye of tourists. But Landstraße is not just about luxury or history. It is a combination of beauty and comfort, beautiful residential buildings and offices, green and pedestrian areas.
In recent years, the area has seen an active growth in new buildings. The area is densely populated and considered elite due to the Diplomatic Quarter, which is home to more than 20 embassies and consulates. This has had an impact on property prices.
Prices:
The cost per square meter of housing on the market is around €6000 – €7000. And for rent, small but well-designed apartments are priced from 800 euros per month, while large, bright three-bedroom apartments cost around 5000 euros per month.
Prices are not high here. Compared to other districts, Landstraße is a moderately priced area.

Another feature of the Landstrasse district is its well-developed transport infrastructure: Vienna’s largest transport hub, Wien Mitte, is located here: two metro lines, trains, regional trains and the SAT express.
Entertainment:
Landstraße is mostly a residential area, so there is not much entertainment here. Of course, there are grocery stores and boutiques, the Daniel Hotel, which is one of the favourite places for breakfast, the Josefbrot bakery-bistro has the largest cafe on Landstraße and the small amazing Rochusmarkt has some fantastic restaurants and small wine taverns.
Educational institutions:
There are also several schools in the area, including a Montessori international pre-school, a music school and numerous state local schools.
Simmering:
The southern part of Landstraße is often chosen for housing as it is more affordable. A special feature of this neighborhood is Simmering, often referred to as Gasometer City. A cluster of four massive gas tanks was built here to provide energy for the city center in the nineteenth century. Then, in the 1999s, an architectural competition was held, and they were subsequently converted into residential neighborhoods, retaining their original appearance and roofs. In the center of the Landstraße is the Rabenhof, or Raven’s Court. This huge complex of apartment buildings was created on the site of a former military base. The arches and courtyards between the residential blocks make it look very attractive. It is also home to the Rabenhoftheater theatre.
Employment:
As this area is a quieter part of the city and mostly residential, Viennese do not consider Landstraße to be a work center. As such, jobs here are usually found in the service sector, in local shops, hotels, restaurants and cafes. However, embassies are an exception, offering several white-collar jobs.
So, who feels most comfortable in Vienna’s 3rd district?
Landstraße offers a peaceful family life in Vienna and is a safe and secure choice of neighborhood. Even though the district is located in the city center, it has a relaxed atmosphere. On the plus side, there is a range of housing sizes, from apartments to large town houses, which is ideal for different families. This also includes the interesting background of the area, i.e. its historical heritage embodied in various monuments and buildings. Convenient transport interchange, active construction and reasonable housing prices are huge advantages for living here. Cozy cafes and restaurants, parks and beautifully decorated building facades add to the area’s comfort, and the presence of educational institutions makes Landstraße convenient for families with children. The only downside is that the number of jobs is not very large and varied, as Landstraße is not a work center.
So, if you prefer a more relaxed pace of life, but close to the city center, Landstraße is the right choice for you.
