Vienna, in addition to being one of the best cities in Europe to live in, is considered to be the guardian of the traditions of the Austrian Empire in architecture, music and culture. The city inspires with both old and new buildings and is always cozy.

History of Neubau
In 1211, a settlement of the same name was established in the west of Vienna around the church of St Ulrich. The population gradually grew, and the area expanded. At the end of the 17th century, the area was called Neubau (new buildings). In the seventeenth century, it was home to the city’s silk factories. In 1850, the Neubau became part of Vienna’s city limits. Today, District 7 has become an important shopping centre with many shops, galleries, restaurants and nightclubs.

It is located here:
- Museum Quarter – a complex consisting of many museums, located in the former imperial stables and covering the XIX – XX centuries: Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, Leopold Museum and Kunsthalle Wien;
- Volkstheater, the “people’s theatre”, was founded in 1889 on the initiative of the people of Vienna;
- St. Ulrich Church was built in 1721 on the site of the church buildings that had been rebuilt many times since 1211. The image of the saint appears on the coat of arms of the 7th district;

Spittelberg
In the eastern part of Neubau is Spittelberg, a neighbourhood with cobblestone streets consisting of several blocks of Biedermeier-style houses built in the early 19th century. Several parallel streets (Gutenberggasse, Spittelberggasse, Schrankgasse) have been turned into a pedestrian zone and are one of the venues for Christmas fairs. Here you can have lunch and visit the shops. Of the oldest restaurants is the Witwe Bolte. This is a daytime restaurant with delicious food and excellent beer. Opposite is the Am Spittelberg inn – an evening establishment, it is open after 18:00.
Local residents prefer to buy or rent apartments or houses in Spittelberg.
Gallery houses
Vienna’s passageway courtyards were born thanks to the townspeople. The facades of the houses concealed courtyards with arches and passages stretching for hundreds of metres. Balconies overlooked the courtyards and served as passageways to the flats.
Gallery houses were called in Austria in the Czech manner – Pawlatsche. They were centres of communication: here they dried laundry, discussed politics. Passers-by were deprived of this inner courtyard life. Only in the 19th century did the inhabitants of the Adlerhof open one courtyard called Freiwilliger Durchgang (voluntary passage). Neubau also has such courtyards:
- Neustiftgasse 16 – Lerchenfelderstraße 13;
- Adlerhof: Burggasse 51 – Siebensterngasse 46;
- Amerlinghaus: Stiftgasse 8 – Schrankgasse 1.
You can rent an apartment here for around €13/m².
